Seeking equality in divorce
A year after the Canadian province of Ontario began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, a pair of Toronto lesbians are seeking the country's first legal same-sex divorce. And their court action has launched a whole new battle over gay rights in Canada. Currently, Canada's Divorce Act recognizes legal separations only between "a man or woman who are married to each other," and the couple, identified only as M.M. and J.H., have petitioned to have that changed. A healing in their case is set for September 13. J.H.'s attorney, Julie Hannaford, said that the couple's 10-year relationship ended five days after they tied the knot in June 2003, and their story has gained widespread attention in Canada. "This case has attracted five times the media interest that same-sex marriage did," chided Hannaford. "People definitely want to see gays fail at this. There have been 3,000 same-sex marriages in Ontario since they've been legal. One in 3,000 isn't bad odds at all." ...
