Divorce laws … - letters

MULLER DAVIS'S article on marriage and divorce, "Fault or no fault?" (June 5-12), seems to repeat arguments from the 1940s and 1950s. We need to rethink not divorce laws, but marriage as an institution of the state which is "blessed" by the church. Unfortunately, Davis does not mention the thousands of marriages which are dissolved because of abuse, whether emotional, physical or sexual. Mostly a character dysfunction of males (but females are also capable of it), abuse is one of the most serious reasons for separation and divorce. Maybe Davis needs to consider whether abusive persons should be allowed to marry. The divorce rate might decline significantly if they weren't. Andrew E. CarlssonKane, Pa.
