Canada: lesbians can't divorce
North America TORONTO - In June 2003, an Ontario court ruled that lesbians and gay men must be allowed to marry. Soon afterwards, same-sex marriage was legalized in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and the Yukon. However, one of the lesbian couples who was married last year now wants a divorce, and there is no provision in the law for that. The women had been involved for 10 years but they broke up after five days of marriage. Although more than 3,000 lesbian and gay couples have married, they are not covered by the Divorce Act. The attorney for one of the lesbians seeking the divorce says they cannot divorce until the Divorce Act is ruled unconstitutional. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice is considering the case. The federal government has prepared a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in the entire country, but it is waiting for the Supreme Court to rule on the issue. ...
